Star Wars comic #1 (2019): "The Destiny Path, Part I" by Charles Soule
Star Wars comic #1 (2019): "The Destiny Path, Part I" written by Charles Soule, illustrated by Jesus Saiz and Arif Prianto
This was not at all what I expected from this issue #1!! We actually end up starting smack dab in the middle of the end of The Empire Strikes Back with Luke discovering Vader is his father and reliving the moment his hand got chopped off while holding his lightsaber and that same hand plus lightsaber tumbling down down down. The very first image is something, I'll tell you that. Check it out below. A really cool way to start this new mainline volume for sure! Luke still hasn't gotten his new mech hand and Chewie, 3PO, Leia, R2, Lando, and him are all on the Falcon. So they're on their way to the Rebel fleet where Luke will eventually get the new mech hand. I didn't even imagine there was a lot of story between the Falcon flying away from Bespin and Luke getting his new hand, but turns out there was quite a bit!!
The crawl at the beginning of this issue very nicely sets up the first 90% of The Empire Strikes Back, preparing us for the aftermath. Chewie is desperate to go after his buddy and Lando will have none of it, saying it's a lost cause. Chewie is roiling mad (see image below).
Leia decides to take the Falcon to the Rebel Rendezvous Point, overriding Lando's pleas to just lay low. They end up zooming out of hyperspace straight into a firefight...between an Imperial blockade and a star!! Not sure how the ships are holding up so close to that much intense heat... The images of the battle are beautiful but slightly confusing. There's what appear to be laser blasts shooting around everywhere...but not enough ships to create said laser blasts. Not really sure what's going on here. But the immensity of the star is clear and the fact that the Imperials greatly outnumber the Rebels is also fairly vivid.
We then meet Commander Zahra who looks just like any other woman but with a definite hard edge. She doesn't have any crazy mechno parts like the woman from the "Poe Dameron" comic or Kanchar from the Shu-Torun "Darth Vader" arc. She seems more ordinary...except it turns out her attributes lie in her skills and intelligence. She's able to aim like an ace and accomplishes the impossible. She also has a super-Kylo Ren moment when the Falcon appears (check it out below).
Side note: I love how Nar Shaddaa keeps coming up in the comics. It makes everything feel much more continuous and connected. They don't go there but it is mentioned and I love it. I just really want to see it on screen someday...
So throughout everything, Lando keeps saying how he's all in for the Rebellion and how that should be obvious. Leia can't stand his presumption and look at one of the faces she gives him below...hahaha! She eventually says, "You're a question, Lando Calrissian, and until we know the answer, consider yourself a guest of the Rebellion." Such a fantastic quote and makes perfect sense!
We also get some mournful contemplation from Luke as he grapples with the news that Darth Vader is his father. He says to himself, "But I'm not a Jedi yet. Yoda made that very clear. I'm still allowed to feel whatever I want. I feel confused. I'm angry. I'm...afraid." This is such a great headspace and super funny because it points out the Skywalker angsty "teenager" aesthetic. In other words, "Gosh darn it, I'm not actually a Jedi, so I don't have to act like one if I don't feel like it." Oh, Luke, you have so much further to go...
This was certainly a great start to this new mainline volume and I'm crazy excited to see where it goes from here, especially since we haven't even reached the end of ESB yet!! Really cool how they decided to drop us straight into the middle of the ESB final act action. Looking forward to what comes next.
