Star Wars comic #74: Rebels and Rogues, Part VII: Destination: Hoth, Part I by Greg Pak

"Star Wars #74: Rebels and Rogues, Part VII: Destination: Hoth, Part I" written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Phil Noto
Oh my goodness!! This issue was magical in so many different ways. First off, there's of course the bizarre rock creatures and their mysterious ways that is just pure Star Wars weirdness. Secondly, there's C-3PO acting noble and brave, doing everything he can to help the Kakrans who call him Brother Ore. And third, there really is hand-to-hand combat between Chewbacca and...Vader!!! Ahhh! I'm super surprised I didn't tear up over the C-3PO bits because they were intensely heartfelt and made me think of the sacrifice he appears to make for the Resistance in The Rise of Skywalker. What a fantastic penultimate issue for this long-run series!!
I only have two hang ups. The first being, I can't figure out whether the "title" on the covers have been taglines or actual titles. If they are titles then this one's a doozy with "Star Wars #74: Rebels and Rogues, Part VII: Destination: Hoth, Part I." Not sure it can get more convoluted than that... The second is that when the "EMP" pulse goes off, lightsabers still work...that doesn't make sense to me. Yes they are powered by kyber crystals but there's still electricity allowing the weapon to fully function. Hmmm.
     As for the story itself:
Dar, Leia, and Han fly aboard a transport to the Star Destroyer above Lanz Carpo...with Boss Carpo giving them the mission of destroying it...with no room for failure or Dar's people will pay the price.
Luke and Warba manage to get away from stormtroopers mounted on giant scary lizard creatures called Desert Manglers (see image below) and warn the Rebel outpost about the encroaching Imperials. The stories all begin to collide as Han and Leia contact 3PO and Chewie on K43 and set a plan in motion (a very humorous plan in fact) to send the Star Destroyer they have been dispatched to destroy toward that planet instead. Luke jumps on the comm channel as well and we see all the pieces fall into place as everyone makes their way to the planet occupied by the wonderfully weird Kakran rock people.
My favorite line from this issue was from 3PO when he learns of the Kakrans' ability to stop tech built by flesh. I won't go into more detail than this because the whole thing is heartbreaking and needs to be read for the full effect. But 3PO says, "It's all right, Chewbacca. Stone, ore, or flesh...I don't care...I'm just happy to have been of service." *sob* I love this ridiculous worrywart so incredibly much and to hear him gain a little bit of agency and sense of self sacrifice for the greater good is just beautiful! See one of the sweetest images ever below.
In conclusion, I cannot wait to see how this series wraps up!! I can tell it's going to be epic, heartbreaking, and joyful all rolled in to one.
