Star Wars comic #75: Rebels and Rogues, Part VIII: Destination: Hoth, Part II by Greg Pak

"Star Wars #75: Rebels and Rogues, Part VIII: Destination: Hoth, Part II" written by Greg Pak, illustrated by Phil Noto
The magic absolutely continued in this epic finale to the "Rebels and Rogues" arc of the Star Wars main-run comic series. I couldn't have asked for more!! I will admit that it was pretty much a love letter to C-3PO (which warmed my heart immensely), but it was also an ode to friends and the amazing feats that friendship can accomplish in the direst of situations. While this may at first sound a bit floofy doofy, never fear because giant rock monsters (see one of the larger but still not biggest ones below, carrying the Millennium Falcon of all things!!), close getaways, and scarily powerful Force powers also abound. And what ends up happening with the rock people was so incredibly weird that it was quintessential Star Wars! So while the overall message was extremely heartfelt and a bit touchy-feely, I LOVED it, and perhaps not in spite of that, perhaps because of that. This ending just felt so Star Wars in so many different ways--from the action to the love between friends to the weird aliens to the space battles--every bit of it was present and an integral part to the story.
A brief note: Okay so, it turns out the "EMP" did affect Luke's lightsaber but for some reason not Vader's...even more perplexing.
     As for the story itself:
Vader continues to battle Chewie and then Luke as he uses the Force to manipulate the lava flowing around and through the landscape--oddly reminiscent of the Mustafar battle but this time with him completely in control of the situation, guess he's learned to deftly control his anger and hate in battle. Soon, Leia, Han, and Dar Champion arrive (with a Star Destroyer in hot pursuit!!--see the awesome image of this below), all blasting their way toward Vader without any damage to show for it. In an enraged but brilliant moment, Vader sets off what amounts to a reverse EMP that turns everything back on..including the bombs!! The first thing that comes out of 3PO's mouth when he wakes up is super ironic in this particular situation. You guessed it, "Thank the Maker!" But once the protocol droid realizes that the bombs are again a threat to his new Kakran friends, he begins stressing into over time about how they're going to survive. Luckily for the rock people, they have a "trick" up their sleeve and aren't as helpless as an outside observer would guess them to be. This is where things get super weird and it is just wonderful beyond all imagination!! I love that such bizarre occurrences exist as part of the overall and underpinning Star Wars framework. It is simply beautiful!!
A great quote from Han in reference to Dar Champion, "That guy always manages to end up right next to her." followed by a quick deflection that it doesn't matter to him either way. I can't wait to see how the Han/Leia love story is referenced in the upcoming main-run series set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
To sum up, this was epic, it was heart warming, and it was essential Star Wars. I highly recommend this arc to any and everybody!! ...especially if you have a soft spot in your heart for my favorite fussy droid *wink*.
