"The Mandalorian: Season 1: Chapter 4: Sanctuary"
"The Mandalorian: Season 1: Chapter 4: Sanctuary" written by Jon Favreau, directed by Bryce Dallas Howard
This was such an incredibly wholesome episode! And there was so much to dazzle the eyes that I almost couldn't see straight. It was VERY reminiscent of the Clone Wars episode where Embo, Obi-Wan, and more team up to teach the Nysillin farmers how to fight against Hondo's band of pirates on Felucia. But this time we get a super cool looking AT-ST with glaring red eyes that I'm assuming is the AT-ST Raider from the LEGO set (that I have yet to build). That walker is one scary beast I tell ya (I didn't include a picture in this review because it's something that needs to come out and surprise you)!! And we get to see The Child playing and interacting with other children--it's absolutely precious beyond measure! The Mandalorian even seems to grow affectionate toward a woman in the village he's saving, but all that crashes down to nothing when well...I'm not giving away the ending.
As for the plot, I've pretty much laid it out above: The Mandalorian lands on Sorgan (a forested, very sparsely inhabited planet) to keep The Child safe but he's approached by a couple of villagers whose home was attacked by raiders (see below) and they want him to protect them from another attack. Along the way, the Mando meets Cara Dune and the two team up to fight back against the raiders, teaching the villagers how to fight as well.
And now a few notes:
We meet a dog sentient species for the first time!! We've had at least a couple of species of sentient cats before but not dogs...very interesting...and they're pirates! They're snarly nasty bulldog-like creatures (see to the right).
We also get a live action Tooka Cat for the first time ever!!! He's adorable but hissy (see below)...I think The Child must freak him out a little bit. It is so incredible that we're getting to see live action versions of things that before were only in animated TV shows. And the production quality for this live action show so far has been through the roof. I showed a few clips to my mom over Thanksgiving and she said, "It's like we're watching a movie!" She is SO right about that.
I have an issue with the fact that the farmers the Mando and Cara Dune help out are Krill farmers--Earth alert!! I am NOT a fan of when Earth terms for species, both plant and animal, are used for Star Wars species. Frustrating.
But on an awesome note...Cara Dune is amazing!!! She is such a freaking bada**! Able to take down the Mandalorian when he was wearing armor and she wasn't. She was a shock trooper sent in to take care of Imperial warlords after the Battle of Endor. But once all the "Imps" were taken care of, her role changed to that of peacekeeper and that was something she "didn't sign up for." So she's taken an early retirement on Sorgan.
Wait?!? The Mandalorian ISN'T Mandalorian??? He tells the woman who takes him and The Child in that the Mandalorians took care of him after his parents died. And that he hasn't shown his face to another person since that day. I apparently wasn't connecting the dots during the flashbacks where his parents weren't wearing armor. Interesting that the Mandalorians can accept a non-Mandalorian as one of their own to the degree that they pass on their culture with all its trappings. But I find it odd that Jango Fett was not lauded as a Mandalorian...in fact he was disdained as a pretender. So I'm a little confused...
So another fantastic episode with visual eye candy galore and story that will melt your heart. I can't believe we only have 4 more episodes to go before this beauty takes a hiatus. Can't wait to see what happens next week!!!
