BB-8 On The Run by Drew Daywalt (picture book)

BB-8 On The Run, written by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Matt Myers
What a precious little picture book that feels like a good ole bedtime story. It has a great moral (that doesn't truly play out until the very end when Rey comes along...you're almost left wondering if the moral will come to fruition which was an interesting tact). And it displays really nice full-page illustrations that will leave little ones captivated I'm sure.
This book takes place from the time BB-8 escapes the fires of Tuanul village to when Rey saves him from Teedo - apparently he had quite a few adventures along the way. He continues to be a caring, supportive droid and can't help but aid those around him. He meets a scared droid named Fez, a starving family of an unnamed species, and a happabore with a hurt leg. He helps them all while still keeping in mind how he can complete his mission to deliver the map of Luke Skywalker's whereabouts.
The new droid Fez, or F3-ZK, is a large load-lifter droid. Unfortunately, he doesn't really look like a Star Wars droid which threw me off a bit. But he's a great character - truly thankful and willing to go out of his way to help. Fez is leaving on a droid ship soon and tells BB-8 that he can come along with him. The question is...can they make it to the droid ship on time?
Personally, wanting to know every single bit of Star Wars canon lore, I enjoyed this little tale as it fleshed out a piece of the story that had been missing and even explains how Teedo captured BB-8 in the first place. As for it being a little kid's book, the moral that helping others will always lead to good for yourself is a fine one. I think this book is a nice addition to the child Star Wars fan's library because it tells a brand new story. Granted, I would've liked it better with just a tad bit more meat, but it was fun nonetheless. Turns out I prefer the young reader reference books, but that might be just me. This book is definitely worth a look-see at least.
