Darth Vader comic #5: The Chosen One - Part V

An intriguing end to the story arc of how Vader acquired his dark side lightsaber. At one point it got a bit trippy and confusing as he was having a vision of a different path he could take - something I didn't expect from Anakin at this point. Turns out he's not fully dedicated to the dark side in every single fiber of his being just yet...until he lets go and makes the kyber crystal bleed through his hate and anger.
We find ourselves on Mustafar again where there is apparently a dark side temple or at least center of energy, a place where Palpatine says Anakin can come out stronger. Palpatine makes sure to reference Anakin's defeat on the same planet to spur him further into wanting to rebuild himself. I was struck as always by Vader's flashbacks to Shmi and Padme - how strong his love was - crazy how such great love can turn a person so evil.
Tarkin and Mas Amedda both make appearances toward the end as Vader returns to show his prize to the Emperor - a brand new red lightsaber. It doesn't explain how he builds the lightsaber though, just how he creates the red crystal. I'm at least assuming he didn't use the same parts as Kirak Infil'a's saber (the Jedi he killed to acquire the crystal) since it looks so different from the one he uses in the movies. I wish it had gone into this part of the mythos as well as I greatly enjoyed the episode in Clone Wars when you saw the creation of Jedi lightsabers.
Overall, I'm enjoying this look into Vader immediately post-Revenge of the Sith. It's interesting to see how he got his start as a dark side warrior. However, I so far prefer the other Darth Vader series that took place after A New Hope - it had more meat and emotion and feeling behind it as Vader discovered he had a son and fought to stand his ground as the Emperor's right hand man. And the number of flashbacks in that series had me frequently in tears. Hopefully this new series will continue to escalate and bring us new and exciting stories about Vader's early days.
